Choosing the Right Material for Your Outdoor Spaces
Porcelain & Sintered Stone
A popular choice for modern outdoor kitchens. Porcelain and sintered stone offer excellent UV resistance, low water absorption, and minimal maintenance, making them well suited for Ontario’s weather conditions.
Granite
A long-time favourite for outdoor BBQ areas. Granite offers excellent durability, natural beauty, and strong resistance to heat and outdoor conditions when properly selected and maintained.
Dekton & Neolith Stone
Dekton from Cosentino is specifically engineered to handle UV exposure, heat, moisture, and freeze-thaw conditions, making it a strong option for outdoor kitchens and entertainment areas.
Quartzite
For homeowners who love the look of natural stone, certain quartzites can perform very well outdoors when the specific material is suitable for exterior use and properly maintained.
What’s Different About an Outdoor Countertop?
Outdoor projects require a different level of knowledge and experience than indoor countertops. Our team is trained to understand what happens to an outdoor installation through Toronto’s hot summers, cold winters, moisture, and seasonal movement. That experience helps us spot potential problems early and plan for them before they become problems. When it comes to outdoor countertops, experience really does matter.
Outdoor Structures Move; Your Countertops Need to Allow for it
Temperature changes can cause the supporting structure to expand and contract, while frost, moisture, and seasonal ground movement can cause brick, concrete, or other parts of the base to shift slightly.
That is why your outdoor countertops need to be installed with the right allowances for movement. As a stone professional, we look at how the base is built, how it is supported, and what it will be exposed to throughout the year, so we can plan the installation before these small movements turn into bigger problems.
Rain, Snow and Frost Are Part of Designing Outdoors
Your outdoor countertop has to handle more than summer BBQs. It needs to deal with rain, snow, frost, freezing temperatures and constant temperature changes. Water can get into joints and around the base, then freeze and expand. That’s why outdoor countertops need to be planned differently.
As certified stone experts, we’ll help you choose the right material for your outdoor space. Every location is different, and we know how different stones perform in outdoor conditions. We’ll walk you through the options and help you choose what makes sense for your project.
Outdoor Countertops Need to Be Built to Handle Winter Too
If you live in Toronto or the GTA, you know our outdoor spaces have to deal with everything from hot summer days to snow, ice, freezing temperatures and repeated freeze-thaw cycles. The base underneath can move, moisture can get into joints and gaps, and freezing water can put stress on the stone. The material, support, seams, overhangs and installation all need to work together.
That’s why we look at your outdoor space and how it will handle Toronto’s weather throughout the year, not just how it looks during summer BBQ season.
When Is the Best Time to Build an Outdoor Countertop?
The best time to build an outdoor countertop is before you need it. In Toronto and the GTA, spring and summer are the busiest times for outdoor kitchens and BBQ areas, so planning in advance gives you more flexibility with material selection, fabrication and installation.
Planning an outdoor project for next summer? Fall and winter are good times to start the conversation. You can make your material and design decisions early and be ready to install when the weather cooperates.
Outdoor Kitchen & BBQ Countertops FAQs
What is the best material for an outdoor BBQ countertop?
There isn’t one material that’s best for every outdoor space. It really depends on how exposed your countertop is to sun, rain, snow and freezing temperatures. We can help you compare granite, porcelain, sintered stone, Dekton and suitable quartzite based on where your countertop is and how you plan to use it.
Can quartz be used for outdoor BBQ countertops?
For a fully exposed outdoor countertop, standard engineered quartz is usually not our first choice. Long-term sun exposure can affect some quartz products. We’ll look at your specific outdoor setup and recommend materials that are better suited to the conditions.
Can you install a countertop on a brick outdoor BBQ base?
Yes, we can. The important thing is to make sure the brick or masonry base is properly built and supported. Outdoor structures can shift over time, especially with changes in temperature and ground conditions, so we take that into account when planning the countertop.
How much overhang can an outdoor BBQ countertop have?
It depends on the stone, thickness, support underneath and how you want to use the overhang. A countertop for seating needs different support than a small overhang beside the BBQ. We’ll let you know what makes sense for your setup.
Can you make cutouts for a BBQ, sink or other appliances?
Yes. We can make custom cutouts for built-in BBQs, sinks, faucets and other outdoor appliances. If you have the appliance model and specifications, provide this information to us before fabrication so we can make sure everything is planned properly.
Can an outdoor countertop be installed in winter?
It depends on the project and the site conditions. We can fabricate the stone during the colder months, but the base, installation area, adhesives and access all need to be suitable. We’ll look into your project and let you know if the conditions are right for installation.
Do you measure outdoor BBQ countertops?
Yes. For a custom outdoor project, we have to come to the job site and look at the actual structure, support, appliances and layout before we finalize the measurements. Outdoor bases aren’t always perfectly level or square, so seeing the actual site is important before we cut the stone.
Planning an outdoor counter?
Photos of your base, even half built, and the spec sheet for your grill are usually enough for us to tell you what your counter involves and what we would need to look at next.
