Project Overview

Replacing Dark Granite Without Rebuilding the Kitchen

This Mississauga kitchen originally used dark, heavily patterned granite across the peninsula and surrounding work surfaces. Because the cabinets were also dark, the countertop visually blended into the cabinetry and made the compact kitchen feel heavier.

The existing dark wood cabinets, stainless-steel appliances and white subway-tile backsplash remained part of the room. The project concentrated on replacing the countertop surfaces rather than treating the work as a complete kitchen renovation.

White marble-look quartz introduced stronger contrast and made the veining the new visual focus. The replacement included the peninsula, a vertical waterfall end, the undermount sink area and perimeter sections fitted around the existing walls, corners, cabinets and refrigerator position.

Final measurements could not rely only on the shape of the original granite. The new pieces needed to follow the actual cabinet layout, wall conditions, sink opening and exposed peninsula end while maintaining consistent visual lines throughout the existing kitchen.

Replacement Planning

Details That Shaped the Countertop Replacement

01

Existing Cabinet and Wall Fit

Because the original cabinetry remained, final countertop measurements had to follow the existing cabinet boxes, wall corners and appliance positions. A replacement surface should be templated from current site conditions rather than copied directly from the removed countertop.

02

Waterfall Peninsula End

The horizontal peninsula top and vertical quartz end needed to be planned as related pieces. Pattern direction, corner alignment and the exposed side affect how the waterfall treatment reads from the adjoining living area.

03

Undermount Sink Coordination

The sink dimensions, cabinet opening, faucet position and remaining quartz around the cutout needed confirmation before fabrication. This countertop scope does not describe plumbing disconnection or reconnection.

04

Perimeter Fit Around Existing Elements

The refrigerator-side run, wall corners, backsplash line and existing cabinet layout all influenced the replacement pieces. Overhangs and visible countertop lines needed to remain coordinated across separate sections.

Visual Transformation

What Changed—and What Stayed

The main change was not a full reconstruction of the kitchen. Replacing the dark granite with white marble-look quartz shifted the room’s contrast and visual focus while retaining the established cabinetry, backsplash, appliances and basic kitchen layout.

Project Scope

Countertop Replacement Planning From Removal to Installation

This Mississauga project focused on replacing the former granite surfaces while working with the existing kitchen footprint. Countertop replacement requires more than selecting a lighter colour: the existing cabinets, sink base, wall conditions, peninsula shape and appliance clearances all influence the final quartz fabrication plan.

The documented countertop scope does not assign cabinet installation, backsplash replacement, plumbing work, electrical work or appliance installation to Countertop Pro.

  • Review of the existing kitchen and original countertop layout
  • Removal of the former dark granite countertop surfaces
  • Final templating over the retained cabinetry
  • Review of the selected white marble-look quartz pattern
  • Planning of the peninsula top and waterfall side panel
  • Coordination of the undermount sink cutout
  • Fabrication of the perimeter and peninsula quartz pieces
  • Delivery and installation of the replacement countertops
  • Final inspection limited to the completed countertop scope
